Diabetes

Well that sucks.

This morning I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. In a way, it’s a relief – only because I’d feared the strange symptoms I’d been having which prompted my visit to the docs, were something else entirely. So in that respect, diabetes is a positive diagnosis. Having said that, it still sucks.

I’d gone to the doctor’s complaining of smelling things that weren’t there – phantosmia, it’s called. In my case it manifested as constantly smelling electrical burning. Unpleasant and really annoying! So the doctor took a look up my nose, made a few clucking noises and sent me for some blood tests. I got those back today to be told in no uncertain terms that my blood glucose levels were way above the norm, and I had Type 2 diabetes.

For now I’m not on any kind of medication. The doc wants me to get my blood sugar levels down on my own for a while, to see how I do. That means all HFCS-laden food and drinks are out, and a regime of regular exercise and “diet” drinks (along with plenty of water) are in. If nothing else, it’ll mean my waistline should reduce! No more empty calories from all that Coca-Cola.

I’m due back at the doctor’s in three months for a checkup. We’ll see how my blood glucose looks by then…
